Interview with Claire C. Riley

Do you take pleasure in killing off readers favorite characters?

Hahahaha! Wow, it’s going to be like that, huh? Lol

Okay, well no, I don’t actually take pleasure in it. In fact, it hurts me to kill those characters, seriously. I love them just as much as you do. But I do it because I have to. I do it because that’s life. People die that you don’t want to die. Life is cruel, it’s hard, it’s unexpected. But those things are also what makes the journey of life so beautiful. And books, like life, are beautiful. So I kill characters off to keep it real and to keep the readers on their toes. I don’t ever want a reader to pick up one of my books and know what they are going to get from it. I want them to be surprised, shocked, saddened, overjoyed and at the end…I want them to close the page and stare into the air for a while as they think over what just happened.

Who are some of you biggest writing influences?

Honestly, I have such eclectic tastes with books, I couldn’t say who I take an influence off. I read pretty much any genre and can be found reading several books at once. Anything from contemporary romance, to zombie apocalypse books. I would like to think that I have my own style that doesn’t take influence from anyone but myself.

BBB is a little more roamancy than TTB. Was that a conscious decision or was that just where the characters wanted to go?

A little of both to be honest. Each story is centered around a different type of love or emotion and with different characters. This one was more on love and redemption and finding out where your heart belongs at the end of the world when you have nothing and no one left, not even yourself. Eagle needed someone to love him, as did Autumn. In essence we went where they told us they wanted to go.

What is your writing process like? Do you map out or do you just see where the story takes you?

It honestly depends on the story. For instance when I wrote the first Odium The Dead Saga book, I had a very clear picture in my head of what I wanted to happen and where it would go, but other than what I had in my head, I basically winged it. However, I’m currently writing a dystopian post-apocalyptic romance and that has been plotted out thoroughly.

Sometimes the story just speaks to you, and other times you need to coax all of the elements out. The only thing I will say is I always know where I want it to begin and where I want it to end.

If you could meet any other author who would it be?

I am actually very shy haha, I both dread and look forward to meeting people, whether readers, authors or bloggers. I get itchy palms and freak out! But I am in a writing group with some seriously bad-ass women and one day, we’re thinking 2017 I will be heading over to the states and we’ll all be meeting up for sure.

Tell us about your upcoming books. You have a new witch to introduce us to? And how about Liv? What can we expect from her?

I have a lot I’m working on right now because I’m majorly behind with my writing schedule. Yes, I have a witch romance – Raven’s Cove — coming out in October. It’s a novella and seriously hot 😉 then I’m also writing a dystopian post-apocalyptic romance series –At Death We Must Part. I’m hoping to get the first one out by the end of the year. I’m in love with this series and it might just be my favorite thing ever. 🙂

Next year, along with a lot of other releases, Mad and I will also be writing the third book in the Thicker than Blood series – and no I won’t tell you anything about it other than we are going to fuck with your head and take you on a series ride with this book *insert evil grin*

Will you be touring in 2016?

I’m in several places in 2016;

Manchester (UK)

Edinburgh (UK)

Leeds (UK)

And Dublin (Ireland)

All things being well, I’m actually hoping to get over to the states in 2017.

Have you read any good books lately?

Yes, so many! I just finished The Water is Sweeter by Eli Constant and ADORED it and I’m currently reading Gus by Kim Holden and I’ve been reading The Missing series by A. Meredith Walters…because that woman can write no wrong!

I also have an arc of Brittainy C. Cherry’s new book ‘The Air He Breathes’ on my kindle to read next. But you know whenever I get stuck on what to read next I always come to you for recommendations!

I know we can’t ask you who your favorite character is, but is there a character who’s POV you loved writing? A character you love to hate?

I write a book earlier this year – Into the Light (post-apoc) about a mother and her daughter travelling across the country to try and get to safety. My agent currently has it out on submission, so fingers crossed, but honestly, this has been my most favorite thing I’ve written so far. I loved those characters dearly, and it was a beautiful experience to write their story.

I also loved writing Nova and Crunch from my Odium series. I really like bad-ass feisty women. But you probably knew that already haha

Your ZomPoc series, Odium, is phenomenal. Will you write another ZomPoc outside of the Thicker Than Blood series?

Oh yes, without a doubt!

I love writing anything dystopian, apocalyptic etc, and of course I love my zombies. I like to mix it up a bit though with different scenarios than just zombies, and I have done just that with a couple of as yet unreleased books (don’t worry, they’re coming out very soon!) books.

But I’m ready to dive back into zombies now and I’m currently part way through two separate zombie novellas which will both be out later this year. I also have the fourth Odium book which I will be starting very soon in the hopes to get it out around February time.

Best
