With the Experiment in Terror show finding some success, amateur ghost hunters Perry Palomino and Dex Foray embark on their most terrifying investigation yet. A tiny, fog-shrouded island in the rough strait between British Columbia and Washington State has held a dark secret for decades: It was a former leper colony where over forty souls were left to rot, die and bury each other. Now a functioning campground, Perry and Dex spend an isolated weekend there to investigate potential hauntings but as the duo quickly find out, there is more to fear on D’Arcy Island than just ghosts. The island quickly pits partner against partner, spiraling the pair into madness that serves to destroy their sanity, their relationship and their very lives.

“Where are we?”
“This is the Island of Death. This is purgatory. This place has a dark soul of its own. And it will drown you in its depths.”

I don’t even know where to start… Wow. That was a hell of a ride! I was full of emotions throughout the book. As always, I love Perry and Dex, but this story was phenomenal! I was scared crapless for the last 20% or so. I am still freaking out.Karina Halle, my hat is off to you and your story telling abilities! I need a break from what I just experienced, but I will probably dive into book 4 after my next book. A happy, cutesy book to serve as a balm for the exposed vulnerable state this story just left me in.

“In all of our experiences together, there always was that moment that I could have turned back and I never ever did. Even if it scared me to the core, to the very soul and fiber of my being, I still went forward into the unknown. Some may call that brave. I don’t think I’d call it that. Stubborn beyond repair seemed more fitting.”

In this story, Dex and Perry are on a secluded island, hunting the truth behind the ghost legends. Their time on the island quickly becomes hazardous as they themselves start doubting their devotion to one another… as friends and business partners of course. *cough, cough*

“I hated how easily my feelings got involved in every single thing he did or said. I always thought maybe it intensified when we were apart, you know, like a celebrity you’d pine after from afar. But it only grew when we were together. Sometimes it felt like looking at his face and just accepting the way things were between us was the hardest thing in the world.”

I was immediately drawn in by the incredible chemistry between Dex and Perry and their witty banter. They are both oddballs in their own right, but it works for them. She is a mess and he has a few loose screws. Eh, who doesn’t? With each of the Experiment in Terror books, I find myself more and more connected with Dex and Perry. I love that their connection is evolving so naturally. Three books in and they still don’t know where they stand with each other. I think this is true to their characters down to their core. As a reader, I appreciate the pace of their relationship and the opportunity to watch it grow as it needs to.

“I still need you,” I murmured. He rested his forehead against mine and closed his eyes, his breathing irregular. Then his lips found mine again. It made my heart ache, made my soul ache. I loved him far too much.”

On to the ghosts and fun! This island is full of creepiness. A solid 10 on the Creep-o-Meter. They are alone. Expect for the ghosts. It’s Canada. It’s November. It’s a freaking island that once housed lepers. Hey, I like adventure as much as the next girl, but these too are crazy! It was like there was a pair of eyes watching and lurking throughout the entire story . As the story continues, it is like Dex and Perry start to turn on each other. No, they attack each other. They are not themselves and it seems like the island is winning. I seriously wasn’t sure if they would recover from their cruel actions at the end… or if they would even survive. My heart was racing and my head was spinning by the 80% mark. The action didn’t stop until the book ended. Now I’m dying to know what will happen next for these two.

5 well deserved stars! Whiskey was the drink on the island and I’m sticking with it! (Plus I can use the empty bottle as a weapon against the lepers.)
