“Those who are patient, plan. And beware the man with a plan.”
I am a sucker for peer pressure. So when I continually saw people screaming that this book was a must read, I gave in. Holy hell did I have no idea what I had been missing. I love “romance” that is dark, sick, twisted, and a little bit fucked up. I need something different every once in a while. Corrupt is all of these things.
I have never read anything quite like this. It is romance, jealousy and revenge all in one fantastic package. The world that Douglas builds for us is full of lies and deception. It’s hard to tell what is real and what is perceived to be real until the very end. I actually love when I think I have things figured out and then the author drops a bomb and destroys everything you thought you knew. There were a few uncomfortable moments but I felt like it added to the suspense and intrigue. I must warn, this book is like crack, once you start you absolutely will not be able to stop until the very last word.
Michael Crist is one of the most intimidating, yet equally magnetic characters I’ve read in a while. The kind of guy you’re pretty sure might murder you after he’s done with you but you still want to go home with him anyway. There is actually a lot more to him than that. He’s loyal to a fault, which is what makes the story work. Erika was slightly annoying at first, but it was great to watch her grow as a person when the story fast forwards. She is no longer some wide eyed little girl lusting after her boyfriend’s older brother. She is determined to make her own place in the world, regardless of other people’s plans for her.
“When you want to make an impression and you think you’ve gone far enough, go a little further. Always leave them wondering if you’re just a little bit crazy, and people will never fuck with you again.”
This book will own you. From the very first page I was consumed. I was sucked into this twisted little world and was sad when it ended. I wanted to race through to the end and somehow make it last longer all at the same time. There were some scorching hot moments in this book, and some of them were simultaneously terrifying. Pure genius if a writer can have you turned on and scared all at the same time. If you are looking for something completely different, dark and captivating, this is the book for you.
5 stars and a bottle of Merlot! Enjoy!
